2024 UC Berkeley Summer Session

Academic and personal experiences in Berkeley, California (Jun-Aug 2024)

Overview

I participated in the UC Berkeley Summer Session from June to August 2024, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in both academic and campus life at University of California, Berkeley. During the session, I took courses in Game Theory and Computational Models of Cognition, which strengthened my analytical thinking and deepened my understanding of decision-making processes and cognitive systems. Beyond academics, I explored various cities across California, gaining diverse cultural experiences and a broader global perspective.

Academic Experience

Game Theory

In the Game Theory course, I studied fundamental concepts such as strategic decision-making, Nash equilibrium, and various game-theoretic models. I learned how to analyze interactions between rational agents in both competitive and cooperative settings, developing a structured approach to understanding complex decision-making scenarios. Through problem sets and real-world applications, I was able to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations, strengthening my analytical and reasoning skills.

Computational Models of Cognition

In the Computational Models of Cognition course, I explored how human cognition can be represented using computational and probabilistic frameworks. I learned key concepts related to decision-making, learning processes, and cognitive architectures, gaining a deeper understanding of how the human mind can be modeled mathematically. This experience provided valuable insights into the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence, broadening my perspective on intelligent systems and human behavior.

Travel & Exploration

San Francisco

During my visit to San Francisco, I explored iconic landmarks such as Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf. I experienced a variety of neighborhoods, each with its own unique cultural atmosphere, and enjoyed the distinctive blend of urban energy and coastal scenery that defines the city.

San Jose

In San Jose, I explored the heart of Silicon Valley and visited areas closely connected to the tech industry. Compared to San Francisco, the environment felt quieter and more suburban, which provided a different perspective on daily life in the region. This experience helped me better understand the technological ecosystem that drives innovation in the area.

Los Angeles

While in Los Angeles, I visited major attractions such as Hollywood and Santa Monica, experiencing the city’s large-scale urban environment and entertainment culture. I also had the opportunity to watch a live baseball game of the Los Angeles Dodgers, which allowed me to experience the vibrant atmosphere of American sports culture firsthand. In addition, I visited Joshua Tree National Park, where I explored its unique desert landscapes characterized by distinctive rock formations and Joshua trees. These experiences highlighted both the dynamic city life and the diverse natural environments surrounding Los Angeles.

Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, I explored a city known for its vibrant entertainment and nightlife. I experienced large-scale themed hotels and unique architectural designs, observing how the entire urban environment is intentionally crafted to enhance tourism and immersive experiences.

In addition to the city itself, I joined a canyon tour that took me to some of the most remarkable natural landscapes in the United States. I visited Grand Canyon, where I was able to witness its vast scale and dramatic geological formations, as well as Antelope Canyon, known for its narrow passageways and striking light beams. I also explored Horseshoe Bend, where the Colorado River curves around a massive rock formation, offering a breathtaking panoramic view. This experience allowed me to appreciate not only urban entertainment but also the grandeur of natural landscapes.

Campus Life

Life at UC Berkeley

During my time at UC Berkeley, I experienced various aspects of campus life by exploring key facilities and landmarks. I visited the iconic Sather Tower (Campanile), toured the university libraries, and spent time at the recreational sports center. I also explored the campus souvenir shops and walked through the Berkeley Botanical Garden, appreciating its diverse collection of plants. In addition, I regularly tried meals at campus dining halls, which gave me a glimpse into everyday student life and the university’s vibrant atmosphere.

Around Campus

Around the campus, I explored a variety of local restaurants and cafes, experiencing Berkeley’s diverse food culture. I visited popular spots such as bubble tea shops and hot dog stands, as well as unique places like independent bookstores and record shops. These experiences allowed me to engage with the local community and discover the creative and eclectic character of the area surrounding the university.
